Valor: 12th Annual Salute to Veteran’s Concert

In tribute to our nation's veterans, the Northwinds Symphonic Band, under the direction of Helen P. Bauer and assistant conductor Audrey Edelstein, will open its 13th concert season with a special performance at the Wunsch Arts Center, Robert Finley Middle School, 1 Forest Ave. Glen Cove, NY on Sunday, November 17th at 3:00 PM.

The band will honor veterans past and present, performing a variety of patriotic standards as well as new publications that pay tribute to the rich history of our country and American military personnel.

Northwinds will perform Robert W. Smith’s Inchon, a powerful and evocative tone poem inspired by the memory of the heroic veterans of the Korean Conflict’s Inchon-Seoul Campaign. Renowned soprano Stephanie Horowitz-Mulry will once again join the band for swinging arrangements of Gershwin classics They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Strike up the Band!

Also featured on the program will be the hauntingly beautiful On Wings of Angels by prolific and celebrated Long Island composer, Carl Strommen.

Known for its diversified programming, Northwinds will perform the exciting Valor, dedicated to the United States Military Academy at West Point. A poignant narration, based on a letter written by the mother of an American soldier, relates her anxiety, fear and proud patriotic spirit. Band member Loretta Cummings narrates the text that is set to Edward Elgar’s Nimrod. Other highlights include a medley of Cole Porter classics, a march by John Philip Sousa and Jerry Bilik’s Civil War Fantasy.

Please join us to honor America’s greatest heroes. Admission to the concert is free. Bring the entire family. For additional information or inquiries please call 516.375.4957 or email Helen Bauer at The Wunsch Arts Center is wheelchair accessible.
